Most people think they know how to throw a punch, they cock their arm back and swing over the top with all their might. That method is ineffective; however, there is a right way to pack a perfect punch. Practice these pointers to land punches like a pro.
Hands- Keep your left hand about four to six inches in front of your left shoulder. Your knuckles should be parallel to the ceiling and keep your right hand by your right ear, about three inches away, with your right elbow tight to your ribs.
Feet- Plant your feet shoulder-width apart. Your weight should be placed on the balls of your feet.
Knees- Bend your knees, this keeps your hips down and allows you to put more power behind your punch.
Core- Stay relaxed and loose! If you are too tight, you restrict the connection between your legs and arms.
Hips- Your right hip should be back with your left hip pointed toward your target. As you turn into the punch, your hips shouldn’t make a full rotation. A full rotation will cause you to lose a lot of power.
Putting It All Together
- Press your weight into the balls of your feet. Your turn should start with your right foot as the pivot point.
- Turn your right hip and shoulder toward your target, exert power from your legs.
- Your right hand should start with your knuckles pointed up and turn them over as you throw it toward your target.
Throughout the entire process remember, less is more. Stay balanced and relaxed and trust your fundamentals.
