The Core to Boxing

Like most sports, to be a strong athlete requires you to focus a great deal of time on your core. But for boxing it is pertinent- for every punch you throw and every hook you take derives from the strength of your core. The swiftness, the accuracy, and body autonomy of a boxer has all to do with the core.

 

As mentioned above, the key to a powerful punch and hook is held within the core. Every part of your body links with one another to pass energy into a boxer’s punch- called a kinetic chain. But the chain is only as strong as its weakest part. It requires a strong set of core muscles (the abs, the hips, and the lower back) in order to pass as much energy as possible into a punch.

 

Now to dodge, dip, and step swiftly, you’ll also need (you guessed it) a strong core. Your muscles support and stabilize your entire upper body, so when these muscles are strong, you effectively move your lower body, allowing you to shift your body in any direction and adjust to movements of your opponent. Of course, if your core is weak, then you will find yourself off-balance in situations where you need to change position quickly. No matter how fast your feet are, if your upper body cannot stay balanced in response to your footwork, you’ll be sure to topple over.

 

Now, I’m sure you’re wondering ‘how do I develop this strong core?’ For a boxer, building core strength is about both stamina and explosive power. Low-intensity exercises like planks will build that base strength. High-intensity exercises like the Russian Twist will build the ability to execute explosive rotation of your upper body when punching. And you’ll also want to incorporate functional movement exercises that engage your core along with a variety of muscle groups.

 

Now keep in mind that working out for 30 minutes a day is just the minimum amount of effort needed to help fight disease. Working out around 60-90 minutes a day then begins to aid in weight loss, muscle growth, and a healthier cardiovascular system. Which will in turn help lead you down a stronger, more accurate punch throwing boxing career. The choice it yours!
