Proper Running Technique

Running is an incredible workout that comes with some great benefits. When running on a consistent basis, you will find yourself losing weight, building confidence, relieving stress, and improving your overall health just to name a few. It is important to make sure you are running properly, as form is an important part of preventing injury. It also will allow you to reap those amazing benefits we touched on! Let’s take a look at what a proper running technique consists of.

When you are running, it is important to look ahead and keep hands at the waist level. Looking down is not only unsafe (hello oncoming car!), but it also puts strain on your neck, upper back, and shoulders. Imagine yourself as a puppet, with the imaginary strings pulling your body upright while keeping it straight. This strategy will also allow you to maintain good posture, which is very crucial to running safely and effectively. If we keep the focus here on preventing muscle strain and tension, try to keep your hands relaxed. When we tighten our hands by making a fist, it actually puts stress on the arms, shoulders, and neck. Visualize yourself carrying two lightbulbs, keeping your hands relaxed. Focus on your shoulders being loose and not up towards your ears. This will allow for your chest to open up and for the lungs to work appropriately. Keep your arms at your sides, swinging from the shoulder joint. Run lightly, landing on both feet. Believe it or not, bouncing while running exerts more energy leaving you fatigued.

Running is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that many people enjoy. When using a proper running technique, you will find yourself benefitting from this exercise immensely while preventing injury. If you are still struggling with nailing down the technique, do not hesitate to talk to your doctor or physical therapist.
