Perfecting the Boxing Stance

Boxing is an incredible workout and a popular combat sport that many people engage in.

And for those of you that fall into that population, you may understand that perfecting the boxing stance is at the top of the list when learning this combat sport. Yes, there are many ways you can stand in boxing. It is important to keep in mind that you cannot box well if you are not in the correct stance. Your boxing stance provides the support you need to effectively execute your movements whether on the offense or defense, as well as helps to improve your coordination of footwork.

Benefits of the Correct Boxing Stance

When you have engaged in the perfect boxing stance, you immediately are able to find that stable fighting position. You gain more balance, mobility, and more power when in the correct stance. Not only are you able to throw a variety of powerful punches without placing yourself in a vulnerable position, but you are also able to remain balanced when you have to react quickly. Let’s take a closer look at the basics of perfecting your boxing stance regardless of your size and build.

Perfecting Your Stance

Here are the important key aspects of perfecting your boxing stance:

  • Ensure feet are shoulder-width apart and stand up straight
  • While keeping your feet mostly parallel to each other, shift one of your feet slightly forward. The lead foot should be far enough ahead of your back foot that you can shift your weight when throwing a punch. It is important to make sure you still feel balanced in this position. You will use the hand that is on the same side as your lead foot to throw a punch.
  • Raise the heel of your back foot slightly off the ground with your toes planted and ready to pivot as you plant your lead foot into the ground.
  • Make fists, making sure your thumb is outside and beneath your knuckles. Now bring both hands up slightly above chin height. Knuckles should be facing up. Tuck your elbows to your sides and keep your hands level. Throw a punch, and make sure your hands return to this guard position immediately to defend yourself from your opponent’s punches.
  • Slightly bend your knees as if you are going to squat and balance your weight between the front and back leg. You should feel balanced but ready to move.

At the end of the day, your perfect boxing stance is one that fits your style and the situation at hand. It can take some time learning the correct technique for you. No matter what, the stance is an important element to boxing and is critical to perfect as the power you get to execute your movements comes from the ground up.
